May 27 - 29, 2022 • Intercontinental • Athens

The great evolution of commerce continues to reveal new paths for us. The interaction of political, economic, social, cultural and technological elements, changes the status quo and shapes a different reality for the future of commerce. The transition from traditional to modern, and in particular to the new wave of digital globalization and innovation, will be the main focus of the two-day conference.

The aim of the 'Future of Retail' is to establish a permanent institution which will be in charge of monitoring the rapid changes observed in the sector of commerce.

Organized by the Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship, the 2nd "Future of Retail" is a leading discussion forum focusing on the interpretation of current facts about trade. International trends will be analyzed and conclusions regarding the future of trade will be drawn. Finally, important questions about the future course of commerce will be addressed.

The key theme of the Conference

Future of Retail 2022: The retail trade with a horizon of 2040

Future of Retail 2022 takes place at a time when changes in retail seem to be massive. The Covid-19 pandemic and travel restrictions accelerated the already emerging digital transformation, bringing about great changes in the retail sector. Indicatively, and only for Greece, it is reported that in 2020 the turnover of domestic retail companies fell on an annual basis by 8.0%, recording losses of 3.5 billion euros. Of course, the pandemic accelerated the mega-trends, which were incubated for a long time in the heart of the 4th Industrial Revolution. In Greece, e-commerce has grown significantly (an increase of about 25% in the CIS in 2020), while the energy crisis that followed the pandemic, explicitly highlights the importance of sustainability and energy savings, even in its industry retail.

It is rightly argued, therefore, that retail is at the heart of a twin transformation: digital and green. The digital transformation, which is more visible now, includes the expansion of e-commerce and the use of digital technologies, such as automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, large data sets etc. The green transformation refers to the various areas of the value chain, from the energy upgrade of commercial enterprises to a general ecological shift of consumers, which affects both the production and consumption of products. All these changes enclose the field of work, dictating new strategies for the development and management of human resources in commercial enterprises (retraining and upgrading of skills, as well as the emergence of new professions).

These are transformations that are recorded in an industry, which is an important component of the Greek economic and social formation, actively participating and in various ways in all aspects of human activity. With the participation of trade exceeding 12%, during the last three years (2017-2019), in the Gross Value Added (GVA) of the Greek economy, the retail sector is ranked 1st, among all sub-sectors, in the total number of employees in the Greek economy.

Given the multiplicity of transformations that the retail industry is experiencing, the Future of Retail 2022 conference seeks, in the midst of a dual crisis (pandemic and energy), to map and delineate the new environment in which outlining the need to connect research institutes and commercial enterprises, while highlighting the need for a wider transformation of commercial enterprises. In any case, the goal of Future of Retail 2022 is to turn it into an open forum, in which the broader developments in the retail industry will be decoded and made meaningful.
